A recent survey by SellCell reveals that while iPhone users show greater interest in mobile AI than Samsung users, the current Apple Intelligence features fail to deliver value. Nearly half (47.6%) of iPhone users consider AI features important when choosing a new phone, compared to only 23.7% of Samsung users. Yet, the majority of users across both brands remain unimpressed with their smartphone’s AI capabilities.
Among iPhone owners, 73% say Apple Intelligence features add little to no value, while a staggering 87% of Samsung Galaxy AI users echo this sentiment. This dissatisfaction is reflected in the lukewarm reception of Apple Intelligence’s features prior to the iOS 18.2 update. Writing Tools were the most popular, with 72% of users finding them useful, followed by Notification Summaries (54%) and Priority Messages (44.5%). However, features like Smart Reply in Mail and Messages (20.9%) and Clean Up in Photos (29.1%) saw minimal enthusiasm.
The release of iOS 18.2 brings two promising innovations: Genmoji and ChatGPT integration. Genmoji allows users to create custom emojis using Apple Intelligence. A glowing smiley icon on the emoji keyboard invites users to describe their desired emoji, which is then instantly generated.
ChatGPT integration also aims to elevate the AI experience by working alongside Siri. Users can now initiate queries with “Ask ChatGPT,” seamlessly connecting them to OpenAI’s chatbot for complex questions.
While these updates bring novelty, they represent Apple’s attempt to address the underwhelming initial reception of Apple Intelligence. The survey suggests that while AI is a deciding factor for many iPhone buyers, the practical utility of such features remains a critical challenge. Whether Genmoji and ChatGPT can shift perceptions remains to be seen, but they could pave the way for more meaningful AI interactions in the future.
