One of aviation’s busiest days in history was recorded last week as 202,000 flights took off and landed around the world, which has been captured in a mesmerizing animation. The animated map was released by the flight monitoring service FlightRadar24 that shows thousands of aircraft filling up the skies.
The company called it one of the busiest days it has ever recorded with a massive 202,157 planes flying in the skies in a day. The website said that it was the first time that it had ever tracked more than 200,000 flights in a day and that there were 19,000 flights in the air at the same time during the peak time.
Writing on Twitter on Saturday, FlightRadar24 said: “Yesterday was the busiest day of the year in the skies so far and our busiest day ever. 202,157 flights tracked! The first time we’ve tracked more than 200,000 flights in a single day.”
The website made it clear that they can not claim it as the busiest day in the history of aviation or if more flights have ever flown in a single day but it was the busiest day in history for them. Flightradar24 describes itself as “the world’s most popular flight tracking service, turning your phone, tablet, or computer into a virtual air traffic radar showing detailed aircraft and flight info for flights worldwide.”
Data from several sources like ADS-B, MLAT, and radar data aggregated together with schedule and flight status is combined to create this service. The website also adds that the least busiest day it sees, tends to be Christmas Day as most people prefer traveling before or after the day.
