Meta’s CTO Was Asked Whether The Term ‘Metaverse’ Did More Harm Than Good, This Is What He Said

Meta's CTO Was Asked Whether The Term 'Metaverse' Did More Harm Than Good. He Chuckled And Compared It To The Early Confusion Over The Word 'Internet.'

In the ever-expanding area of tech buzzwords, the term “metaverse” has splashed since Facebook’s transformation into Meta. However, even Meta’s Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, understands this concept’s perplexity.

During an engaging “ask-me-anything” session on his Instagram story, Bosworth addressed questions ranging from his coffee preferences to the impact of the term “metaverse.” During the session, Bosworth wondered whether the term “Metaverse” had done more harm than good. He assured viewers that the term itself wasn’t the issue but rather the lack of a concrete definition. According to Bosworth, the metaverse still awaits a comprehensive description because it is a work in progress.

To illustrate this ambiguity, Bosworth drew parallels with the confusion experienced in the early days of the internet during the 1990s. He emphasized that even today, the internet remains challenging to define precisely, despite its widespread usage and understanding.

Bosworth acknowledged that even within the teams dedicated to metaverse development, varying interpretations exist. He pointed out that such divergence is typical when venturing into uncharted technological territories.

Surprisingly, Bosworth confessed that Meta did not anticipate the level of attention and scrutiny their rebranding and the term “metaverse” would attract. He candidly shared the initial concern that people might not even notice the rebrand, only to witness it exceed their expectations.

Interestingly, around a year ago, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg fervently championed the metaverse as the future of the internet. However, despite considerable investments, the metaverse failed to gain significant momentum. Meta’s recent layoffs, which included the Reality Labs division responsible for metaverse development, indicate a shift in Zuckerberg’s focus towards artificial intelligence (AI).

As the metaverse continues to evolve, both Meta and industry peers face the challenge of defining its boundaries and unlocking its vast potential.
