Do you know which McDonald’s is the smallest one? Whichever particular branch you might have thought of, it is not the smallest. The smallest McDonald’s has recently opened up in Sweden, and it has got everyone ‘buzzing’. Especially the customers that buzzing around it are bee-having, well like bees. The smallest McDonald’s is called McHive and is actually a completely functional beehive catering to thousands of bees.
Yes, now you understand the bee puns that we have been using. The McHive has two drive-thru windows, outdoor seating, a patio, panels crafted from sleek wood, and even the McDonald’s advertisements on its windows. It has been created by a Swedish creative agency called NORD DDB. Inside the McHive you will not find frying machines but rather ‘hive frames’ that have honeycomb.
The YouTube video’s description by NORD DDB reads, ‘Some of McDonald’s restaurants in Sweden have beehives on their rooftops. The initiative started out locally but is now growing. More franchisees around the country are joining the cause and have also started replacing the grass around their restaurants with flowers and plants that are important for the wellbeing of wild bees. To celebrate the initiative, which is part of McDonald’s Swedens sustainability work, we created what could be the world’s smallest McDonald’s – a fully functioning beehive.’
According to Earth Day Network, the bee population all over the world including the honey bee and a variety of the wild native bees is on the decline. Beekeepers in the United States and Europe have been reporting about 30% of hive losses on a yearly basis for the last ten years. This is considered much more than normal or sustainable. In fact, one in four wild bee species in the US is currently at the risk of going extinct.
