LG Display just surpassed itself by unveiling two new 18-inch OLED panels. First is an 18-inch LED screen, which can be rolled up while still being functional and the second is a transparent display that can turn your windows into TVs.
Flexible screens are not something new in the market, but the one that can be rolled completely is definitely worth praising. The flexible panel made of organic Light Emitting Diodes or OLEDs has a 1200×810 pixel resolution(1 million mega pixels) and can be rolled to a radius of 3cm, boasting the curvature of 30R, without affecting the display in any way. This amazing flexibility was obtained by using ‘high molecular substance-based polyimide film’ rather than the traditional plastic as backplane. This also considerably reduced the thickness of the screen.
LG Display says that they plan to introduce to the world 50 inch rollable screens soon. This means a projector style screen without the need of a projector!
The Transparent Display is the second startling product of LG Display, which was created using ‘LG Display’s transparent pixel design technology’. It could be an amazing way to turn glass windows into TV display when turned on. When switched off, the windows will remain see-through! In comparison to the currently available LCD panels’ transmittance of 10 percent, the new transparent OLED boast a transmittance of 30 percent. LG has hence reduced the haze of the panel to just two percent.
In-Byung Kang, senior VP and head of the R&D Center at LG Display said, “LG Display pioneered the OLED TV market and is now leading the next-generation applied OLED technology. We are confident that by 2017, we will successfully develop an Ultra HD flexible and transparent OLED panel of more than 60 inches, which will have transmittance of more than 40 percent and a curvature radius of 100R, thereby leading the future display market”
