Apple has announced a leadership transition that will see Tim Cook step down as chief executive officer and assume the role of executive chairman, while John Ternus will take over as CEO later this year. The change is scheduled to take effect on September 1.
Cook, who has led Apple since 2011 following the passing of Steve Jobs, will remain closely involved with the company in his new position. The decision was unanimously approved by Apple’s board, and the transition process will take place over the summer, according to the official Apple Newsroom post.
During his tenure, Cook oversaw significant expansion in both hardware and services. Apple introduced products such as Apple Watch, AirPods, and Vision Pro, while also strengthening its services ecosystem with offerings like Apple Music and Apple TV. Ternus, currently Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, has been with the company since 2001. He has played a central role in the development of Apple’s product lineup and has held senior leadership positions since 2021. His background is closely tied to hardware design and engineering, positioning him as a product-focused successor.
The transition marks a shift in leadership style from Cook’s operational emphasis to Ternus’s engineering-driven approach. Analysts say this could influence Apple’s future product strategy, particularly as the company continues to expand into new categories and technologies.
Cook described his time as CEO as the “greatest privilege” of his career and expressed confidence in Ternus’s ability to lead the company forward. Ternus, in turn, acknowledged his long tenure at Apple and the influence of both Jobs and Cook on his career.
