Sikorsky, a part of Lockheed Martin, has delivered the 23rd and final VH-92A “Patriot” presidential helicopter.
The company has been providing presidential helicopters since 1957 but the recent delivery is notable as President Biden used one of these VH-92A helicopters for the first time. During the flight, President Biden was transported from O’Hare International Airport in Chicago to Soldier Field ahead of his appearance at the Democratic National Convention.
The aircraft has now been approved for use as “Marine One,” the call sign for helicopters carrying the President.
“This delivery represents a new chapter in the 67-year history of Marines providing helicopter transport for the President of the United States. The VH-92A Patriot offers enhanced capabilities for this critical mission,” said, Lieutenant General Bradford Gering, Deputy Commandant for Aviation.
“Sikorsky’s role in Marine Aviation has ensured that the United States Marine Corps remains a ready and capable fighting force,” he added. The success of the VH-92A program is evident in its ability to design, build, and deliver the helicopters within budget and on schedule.
The VH-92A fleet will now handle the transportation of the President, Vice President, and other top officials. Sikorsky has extensive experience in this mission for over six decades. The fleet, known as “White Tops” due to its distinctive white and green color scheme, consists of 23 helicopters, with 21 in operation and two reserved for training and maintenance purposes.
Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1) operates the VH-92A fleet. Although this unit had not used the VH-92A as the primary helicopter for presidential transport before, it will now be the main aircraft for shuttling the President, their family, and advisors domestically and internationally.
Richard Benton, Sikorsky’s vice president, and general manager, praised the efforts of Sikorsky’s employees. “Once again, Sikorsky’s skilled team has shown their ability to innovate and deliver next-generation VH-92A helicopters that will support presidential missions worldwide for years to come,” he said.
“This milestone reflects our lasting partnership with the Marine Corps, providing a solution tailored to their unique and critical mission,” Benton added.
The VH-92A program is designed to be affordable in the long term, using the FAA-certified Sikorsky S-92 aircraft, known for its safety and reliability. These helicopters were modified at Sikorsky facilities in New York and Connecticut to meet specific government requirements for the VH-92A mission.
With its official approval, the VH-92A will now be seen more in presidential missions around the world.
