Jeff Bezos Unveils The Blue Moon, The New Lunar Lander

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Blue Origin, has unveiled the Blue Origin’s latest lunar lander model – Blue Moon – that the company is hoping will be ready for service by 2024. Jeff Bezos, at the time of the unveiling of Blue Moon, said, ‘This is an incredible vehicle, and it’s going to the moon.’

The 2024 timetable of Blue Origin’s lunar lander, Blue Moon, aligns with the timetable that has been put forward by Mike Pence, US Vice president, that pushes NASA for building a space platform in orbit around the moon. The end goal is to get American astronauts to the moon again specifically speaking to the south end of the moon. Why? Because a large deposit of water ice exists over there that might provide drinking water, oxygen, and fuel for rocket boosters as per scientists.

Bezos, talking about the 2024 timeline, said, ‘I love this. We can help meet that timeline but only because we started three years ago. It’s time to go back to the moon, this time to stay.’ The lunar lander by Blue Origins, Blue Moon, is a way of getting Blue Origins to enter the ongoing competition for NASA contracts by private companies including SpaceX and United Launch Alliance (ULA) – a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

However, Blue Origins is lagging behind SpaceX and ULA who are currently busing in bidding and fulfilling NASA cargo contracts and will start taking astronauts into space within the next year or two years. Blue Origins, on the other hand, is still building the rockets that it will be utilized for carrying out government contracts. However, the rate of its progress is exceptional. As of right now, the company is busy building a short-range rocket aimed at space tourism and a heavy-lift rocket that will be used for cargo missions to the International Space Station.
