Japan has unveiled a groundbreaking innovation in automotive technology: Idemitsu IFG Plantech Racing, the world’s first racing engine oil made with over 80% plant-based raw materials. Developed by Tokyo-based Idemitsu Kosan Co. Ltd., the oil combines exceptional racing performance with API SP certification, marking a significant milestone in sustainable automotive solutions.
A market survey conducted between December 2023 and February 2024 by Trending Future Research Institute confirmed this oil as the first to unite API certification, plant-based materials, and racing-grade performance for four-wheeled vehicles.
The engine oil leverages palm oil for its base, along with esters derived from rapeseed and sunflower oils, ensuring both performance and environmental benefits. With an 82% lower carbon footprint compared to mineral-based oils, this eco-friendly product aligns with global sustainability goals.
Idemitsu’s extensive testing revealed exceptional results, including: 194% improved toughness compared to flagship variants. 50% lower friction coefficient than leading competitor oils. 169% enhanced protection and 124% better piston cleanliness.
The oil proved its mettle during the Super Taikyu Series, where Mazda Spirit Racing’s Roadster CNF concept successfully competed in a five-hour race session powered by Plantech Racing oil.
The product’s innovative blend, described as “proprietary Molybdenum Ester Technology,” reduces friction and enhances engine protection using nano-tailored, high-viscosity plant esters.
Positioned as a new flagship category, surpassing its IFG 7 predecessor, Idemitsu IFG Plantech Racing will initially be available online in Thailand, Australia, Singapore, and Malaysia. The company plans to expand sales to the U.S., Brazil, India, and other countries soon.
This innovation embodies Idemitsu’s vision of “The Heart of Technology,” offering unparalleled engine performance while dramatically reducing environmental impact.
