The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia attracts media attention once more through its planned construction of a record-breaking 2-km (1.2-mile)-high skyscraper. The business outlet MEED in Dubai reports that the project continues to progress even though it remains unofficial. The future skyscraper will rise above Riyadh’s North Pole business district while Foster + Partners from Britain serves as its design team.
The proposed structure would reach heights equivalent to 3.5 One World Trade Centers and surpass the Burj Khalifa in Dubai by more than double. This structure will rise above the JEC Tower, thus surpassing Saudi Arabia’s second major construction project.

The engineering challenges are staggering. Extreme structural solutions must be developed to handle wind loads that become dangerous at these elevated heights. The foundation needs to support enormous weight loads while remaining stable against seismic disturbances in the area. Modern engineering has achieved one of its most challenging accomplishments through the skyscraper design.
The estimated funding for the structure stands at $5 billion, but the project timeline and full design drawings remain undisclosed. The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) has initiated a project management bidding process for its many large-scale developments after starting its development work.
When finished, this supertall structure will become part of a rapidly expanding list of Saudi groundbreaking projects that includes The Line and Mukaab. The potential world record-breaking skyscraper stands to become Saudi Arabia’s most iconic urban development achievement in its transformation of city design.
