Due to the severely foggy weather, dozens of vehicles collided on a bridge in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou in Henan Province on Wednesday morning, according to official television CCTV. There has been one death.
Several automobiles and trucks were crushed and stacked on top of one another on the Zhengxin Huanghe bridge, as shown in photos and videos posted on social media. In a CCTV video clip, one car abruptly jackknifed in the middle of a pileup.
According to CCTV, several people were hurt and trapped at the scene of the accident, and the fire department was on the bridge. According to preliminary estimates from rescuers on the scene, the pileup involved more than 200 automobiles, and the injured were taken to the hospital for treatment, with one person dying. There was no more information about deaths or reported injuries. According to the local meteorological office, visibility was less than 500 meters (1,640 feet) in several regions, including Zhengzhou, and as low as 200 meters in others.
According to a statement made by the Zhengzhou traffic authority, local traffic police issued a notice two hours ago prohibiting all cars from passing under the bridge due to foggy conditions. The Zhengxin Huanghe Bridge is a large overpass that connects Zhengzhou and nearby Xinxiang across the Yellow River. A 42-second video posted on China’s Twitter-like Weibo platform shows rows of damaged cars and trucks, with people meandering on the bridge and filming and photographing them.
Road accidents are common in China due to a lack of strict safety controls. In September, 27 passengers died after a bus transporting them to quarantine facilities in southwestern Guizhou province flipped over on a highway.
