Hyundai and Kia Want To Put A Wind Turbine In The Front Bumper of Your Car

Hyundai and Kia have patented an unusual system that uses small wind turbines mounted behind a vehicle’s front grille to generate electricity while driving. While the idea may sound similar to long-debunked concepts of charging an electric vehicle with its own motion, the automakers’ design takes a different approach by targeting situations where energy recovery could improve overall efficiency rather than create free energy.

The patent describes a wind power generation system positioned behind active grille shutters in the front bumper, according to automotive publication CarBuzz. When conditions are favorable, the shutters open and direct airflow through a generator before the air exits beneath or behind the vehicle. The companies suggest the system could recover energy during coasting, braking, and even while a parked vehicle is exposed to strong winds.

The concept does not attempt to overcome the laws of physics. At highway speeds, extracting energy from the airflow increases aerodynamic drag, requiring the vehicle to use even more energy to maintain speed. Because power conversion is never perfectly efficient, the system would actually consume more energy than it generates in those conditions.

Instead, Hyundai and Kia believe the technology could be beneficial at lower speeds, where rolling resistance and vehicle weight account for a larger share of energy consumption than aerodynamic drag. Under those conditions, the generator could recover small amounts of electricity that supplement regenerative braking and improve overall efficiency.

The patent also outlines potential applications beyond electric vehicles. In hybrids, the system could help keep the gasoline engine operating within its most efficient range while charging the battery for additional electric driving. For conventional gasoline vehicles, it could replace the traditional alternator by generating electricity for the 12-volt electrical system, potentially reducing engine load and improving fuel economy.

Like all patent filings, there is no guarantee the technology will reach production. Automakers frequently patent ideas to protect intellectual property, even if they never become commercial products. Still, the filing highlights Hyundai and Kia’s continued efforts to improve efficiency across electric, hybrid, and gasoline-powered vehicles through unconventional engineering solutions.
