Honda Launches 400-Mile-Range Tesla Model Y Competitor, But There’s A Catch

The battle for supremacy in the electric vehicle (EV) market continues, and Honda is stepping up to the plate with its first-ever premium electric SUV, the S7. Taking direct aim at the Tesla Model Y, Honda claims its latest offering boasts superior comfort, a sleek, modern aesthetic, and, most impressively, a driving range exceeding 400 miles (650 km). However, there’s a catch—the S7 is currently exclusive to China.

Priced at CN¥259,900 (approximately $36,000), the S7 is poised to compete with Tesla’s Model Y and other premium Chinese electric SUVs like the Onvo L60 and Zeekr 7X. Originally introduced as the “Ye S7,” Honda has now streamlined its branding, opting for the simpler “S7” in collaboration with Dongfeng Motor Corporation.

The S7 comes in two variants: a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) single-motor version and an all-wheel-drive (AWD) dual-motor model. The base variant features an 89.8-kWh battery pack, delivering 268 horsepower (200 kW) and an advertised range of 404 miles (650 km) under China’s CLTC testing cycle. For those seeking extra power, the dual-motor AWD version adds a front axle motor, boosting total output to 469 horsepower (350 kW). However, this increased power results in a slightly reduced range of 385 miles (620 km).

By comparison, Tesla’s Model Y RWD offers up to 368 miles (593 km) on a single charge, while its long-range AWD version extends up to 447 miles (719 km).

Honda has infused the S7 with a range of premium features, ensuring a high-tech and comfortable ride. The SUV includes a three-spoke multifunction leather steering wheel, a streaming media rearview mirror, and even a “fragrance system” for added luxury. Music lovers can enjoy an optional 16-speaker Bose sound system, complete with front headrest speakers.

One of its standout features is a dimming panoramic sunroof, a first for Honda, offering an airy and spacious feel with an ample 33.8 inches (859 mm) of second-row legroom. The S7’s modular battery system, comprising 13 replaceable modules, is designed to reduce maintenance and repair costs by up to 80%.

Honda calls the S7 its “most powerful smart cockpit,” equipping it with a dual-display setup—a 12.8-inch and 10.25-inch infotainment screen, alongside a 9.9-inch instrument cluster. The vehicle supports Honda Connect 4.0, which enables a multi-screen connection and an AI-powered voice assistant.

Safety is a priority, as evidenced by Honda Sensing 360+, an advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) that includes active cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, pre-collision warning, parking assistance, and a 360-degree panoramic camera.

The S7’s bold design includes retractable door handles, a foot-sensing electronic tailgate, and a striking illuminated “H” emblem at the front. It rides on standard 19-inch wheels, with higher trims featuring larger 21-inch rims. Measuring 187 inches long, 76 inches wide, and 64 inches tall (475 x 193 x 162.6 cm), it closely matches the dimensions of Tesla’s Model Y. Cargo space is another strong point, offering 16.6 cubic feet (471 liters) in the trunk.

Cracking China’s highly competitive EV market is no small feat, but Honda hopes the S7’s premium features and impressive range will carve out a space for itself.

As of now, there’s no word on whether the S7 will launch in other markets, and given Honda’s current trajectory, a global release seems unlikely.
