How many of you remember the episode of The Simpsons where Homer became an inventor because of the inspiration from Thomas Edison. He created an electric hammer which has inspired the guy famous for DIY projects; Patrick Priebe. His creation is different from his other laser-inspired works and works quite well.
The electric hammer gets its power from an 18.5volt and 3,000mAh lithium-polymer battery. It has been built from scratch by making use of aluminum only. Once the wooden trigger is pressed, an electromagnetic coil becomes active and results in the drawing in of the cylindrical steel core. The core is affixed to the fiberglass rod’s bottom and gets shot up once the core makes its way through the coil. The rod eventually pushes the hammer’s head forward that has been hinged down creating an arc-like motion. Upon releasing the trigger, a spring that is located inside the assembly retracts the core/rod back into place again.
Although the device works, it is lacks serious power owing to the small distance that the head gets to move. So it can be used only for small nails that need to be driven into soft surfaces. It, however, does save the use from having to draw their arm back after each strike. Once again, Patrick has come up with another amazing DIY device that works quite fine.
