Google Sheets Now Has A Long-Awaited Formatting Feature, And Excel Users Are Excited

Calling all Excel refugees! Google Sheets finally has a feature you’ve been craving for years: one-click table formatting. No more meticulously crafting filters and sorting rules cell by cell. Soon (depending on Google’s rollout), you’ll be able to transform your data into a self-contained haven of organization with a single click.

This update is a game-changer for those who’ve wrangled spreadsheets for years. Imagine the joy of instantly adding filters and sorting options to your decade-old shared budget spreadsheet (yes, we’ve all been there). And based on online murmurs, this functionality has been high on user wishlists for a long time.

While it might resemble the AI-powered tables showcased at Google’s I/O conference, this feature caters more to everyday users – no fancy Gemini integration required. To activate your inner data whiz, simply select your data block and head to “Format > Convert to table.”

Voila! Sheets automatically creates column filters, throws in some row separators (goodbye, manual gray cell formatting!), and even assigns data types, filters, and simplifies drop-down menus. A dedicated table menu lets you create custom filter combinations or adjust the data range.

But wait, there’s more! Google introduces a “Create group by view” option, allowing you to organize data based on filter categories. Think priority levels? Group your records by priority for a clear, categorized view. Pre-designed table templates for project management, inventory, and event planning also join the party, providing a head start on your organizational endeavors.

The one-click table magic isn’t available to everyone just yet. Google, in its usual rollout style, is implementing the feature gradually. Some lucky users will have it by May 30th, with everyone else joining the party by June 6th. So, keep an eye out for the update, and get ready to embrace a more streamlined way to manage your spreadsheet world.
