Ford Is Aiming To Break The EV Quarter-Mile World Record With This 1800hp Electric Mustang

Ford, a brand not typically associated with electric vehicle (EV) performance, is making waves in the motorsports world with its latest creation – the Ford Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800. Building upon the success of the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400, Ford has made several upgrades to its new drag racing machine, aiming to break world records and redefine perceptions of EV capabilities.

The Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 boasts a new transmission and battery system, as well as a revised rear-end setup for improved traction. The car also features new control and data-gathering systems to aid in tuning. However, what truly sets it apart is the impressive power output. Despite utilizing the same two DS-250-115 motors as its predecessor, paired with four PN-250-DZR inverters, Ford has managed to tune the system to deliver a jaw-dropping 1,800 horsepower, a significant increase from the previous 1,500 hp. The weight of the car has also been reduced through modifications, including a lighter-weight battery, shedding hundreds of pounds and further enhancing its performance potential.

Ford’s ambition with the Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 is to break the previous full-bodied EV quarter mile record set by the Cobra Jet 1400, which achieved a quarter mile time of just 8.128 seconds at 171.97 mph in 2021 with Bob Tasca III behind the wheel. Additionally, Ford aims to claim records for the fastest EV zero-to-60 mph time, both in two-wheel-drive and outright classifications.

The record attempts will take place at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in Las Vegas on April 14-16, with seasoned driver Pat McCue of MLe Racecars at the helm of the Super Cobra Jet 1800. McCue’s experience from the Cobra Jet 1400 program puts him in a prime position to push the boundaries of EV performance and make history with the new Mustang.

Ford’s foray into EV racing comes at a time when the market is seeing increased competition, particularly from brands like Tesla known for their quick road-registerable EVs. However, Ford is positioning itself as a dominant force on the track, showcasing its dedication to pushing the limits of performance and technology. The success of the Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 could potentially pave the way for further advancements in Ford’s road-going vehicles, signaling a bold direction for the brand’s future.

In conclusion, Ford’s latest venture into the world of EV racing with the Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 is a testament to the company’s commitment to innovation and performance. With upgraded systems, increased power, and a lighter weight, the Super Cobra Jet 1800 is poised to challenge existing records and push the boundaries of what’s possible with EVs. Ford’s determination to excel in the motorsports arena may have implications for its future road-going vehicles, as it continues to make strides in the world of electric performance. The racing world eagerly awaits the results of Ford’s record attempts, which could further solidify the brand’s position as a force to be reckoned with in the EV landscape.
