Facebook and Instagram’s parent company, Meta, has stated that it intends to increase the categorization of photographs created by artificial intelligence (AI) on all of its platforms. This action is a part of Meta’s attempts to stop the internet propagation of fraudulent content created by AI.

Some AI professionals continue to have doubts about the efficacy of these technologies, despite Meta’s best efforts. Professor Soheil Feizi of the Reliable AI Lab at the University of Maryland made the observation that these kinds of detection systems could be easily circumvented with little image processing and could result in a high false positive rate.

Furthermore, Meta has admitted that their technology has limits, especially when it comes to identifying AI-generated audio and video content. The business intends to rely on user labeling for these types of media instead, and it might penalize non-compliance.

Following criticism of Meta’s handling of manipulated media on its platforms, this announcement was made. Despite receiving funding from Meta, the company’s Oversight Board described the company’s stance on manipulated media as “incoherent” and “lacking in persuasive justification.” The Board recommended that Meta revise its guidelines in light of the way online synthetic and hybrid content is developing.
