The 2024 Zhuhai Airshow spotlighted China’s latest fifth-generation stealth fighter, the J-35A, amidst cutting-edge military technology. Drawing parallels with the F-35 Lightning II from the United States, both jets epitomize modern air combat innovation but reflect distinct defense priorities.
The J-35A, developed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, evolved from the FC-31 demonstrator to meet China’s strategic demands. Initially aimed at exports, it now serves as a carrier-based and land-based fighter for the PLA Navy (PLAN) and Air Force (PLAAF). It boasts a top speed of Mach 2.0, outpacing the F-35’s Mach 1.6, and features enhancements like folding wings and advanced avionics.
The F-35, produced by Lockheed Martin, prioritizes versatility with its 2,220-kilometer range, exceeding the J-35A’s 1,200 kilometers. It integrates stealth-focused designs, sensor fusion, and multi-role capabilities to maintain global interoperability.
Both jets feature low-observable airframes, utilizing streamlined surfaces to minimize radar detection. The F-35 employs advanced systems like the AN/APG-81 AESA radar and Distributed Aperture System, enabling unmatched situational awareness. Meanwhile, the J-35A incorporates Chinese-made avionics and AESA radar tailored for rapid threat engagement.
With internal weapons bays to maintain stealth profiles, the J-35A can carry a payload of 7,000 kg, whereas the F-35 can carry 8,160 kg. The J-35A complements China’s heavier J-20 fighter by emphasizing agility and regional domination, whereas the F-35 excels in long-range, multi-role missions.
Discussions of espionage have been triggered by the J-35A’s design resemblance to the F-35. The importance of protecting military intellectual property is highlighted by reports of cyberattacks that target F-35 data.
In the end, the F-35 and J-35A represent the technological superiority of their countries and will influence air combat in distinct geopolitical situations.
