Elon Musk’s long-delayed Tesla Diner finally opened on July 21, 2025, on Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood. It promised a nostalgic yet futuristic eatery, complete with 80 Supercharger stalls, two massive outdoor movie screens, and even Optimus robots handing out popcorn at launch. The retro-diner-meets-drive-in concept aimed to be entertaining and charming.
Opening day brought droves of fans and long lines. One reporter had to wait two hours to try a novelty Tesla Burger served in a Cybertruck-branded box—and described it as a quirky, memorable experience, albeit one elevated by hunger. But just a couple of weeks later, the buzz has soured.

By August 5, the diner had slashed its menu nearly in half. Originally offering biscuits and gravy, waffles, cinnamon rolls, soft serve, and more, the menu now features only five sandwiches, two sides, a couple of pie flavors, shakes, and soft drinks. Chef Eric Greenspan told Eater the menu will “forever evolve,” blaming “unprecedented demand” for the tight turnaround, though he promised that specials and “Easter eggs” would pop up occasionally, according to a report by Eater LA.
There’s more tension beyond food. Though advertised as a 24-hour spot, the diner currently operates from 6 a.m. to midnight, with only Tesla drivers allowed to charge and order – a policy that has frustrated locals. Eater LA Neighbors complain of insane gridlock, constant honking, parking shortages, and even safety concerns. One resident quipped that if Musk can send people to Mars, he should figure out how to handle his own traffic chaos.

Adding to the friction, protests have sprung up around the diner. Called the “Tesla Takedown” movement, demonstrators criticize Musk’s political actions and say the diner’s visibility gives their cause a platform. The scenes have been peaceful, but the optics aren’t great. The Guardian
So what seemed like a fun, retro-future hangout is now grappling with menu cuts, traffic headaches, and protest signs. Time will tell if Tesla can drive this diner concept forward – or if it stalls out early.
