SpaceX is exploring an ambitious plan to build a vast constellation of AI-powered satellites that could transform space into a giant computing platform, extending artificial intelligence infrastructure far beyond Earth.
The concept, championed by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, involves deploying satellites equipped with powerful computing hardware, large solar arrays, advanced cooling systems, and laser communication links. Together, the spacecraft would function as orbital data centers capable of handling large-scale AI workloads. The proposal builds on technology already being developed for the company’s next-generation Starlink satellites.
Musk said a dedicated production facility for AI satellites is expected to become a major hub for the emerging sector. He noted that much of the required technology has already been developed through the Starlink V3 program, making the project less challenging than many of SpaceX’s previous engineering efforts.
Under the proposed design, each satellite would generate up to 150 kilowatts of peak power and deliver around 120 kilowatts continuously, enough to support significant onboard computing capacity. High-speed laser links would connect the satellites into a large mesh network, enabling data to move rapidly across the constellation. Communication with Earth could be handled through traditional antennas or optical connections.
The initiative comes as demand for AI computing continues to surge worldwide. Traditional data centers face growing challenges related to land availability, energy consumption, and environmental impact. By relocating computing infrastructure into orbit, SpaceX believes it could unlock virtually unlimited expansion opportunities while reducing pressure on terrestrial facilities.
The scale of the proposal is particularly striking. Musk suggested the constellation could eventually include as many as one million satellites. While such numbers raise concerns about orbital congestion, he argued that space remains vast enough to accommodate large constellations safely. He also pointed to SpaceX’s experience operating more than 10,000 Starlink satellites as evidence that the company understands how to manage large fleets in orbit.
The project aligns with SpaceX’s broader ambitions in artificial intelligence, satellite communications, and reusable launch systems. If successful, orbital computing could create an entirely new category of infrastructure, allowing AI systems to operate on a scale difficult to achieve on Earth.
