Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, spent an astonishing $250 million supporting Donald Trump’s successful 2024 re-election campaign, according to newly released Federal Election Commission reports. A significant portion of Musk’s financial backing went toward a mysterious super PAC, RBG PAC, which received $20.5 million from the Elon Musk Revocable Trust.
RBG PAC gained attention with ads suggesting Trump opposed a federal abortion ban, a message that critics, including Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s granddaughter, Clara Spara, called misleading and offensive. The PAC spent heavily on digital ads, mailers, and text messaging in the campaign’s final weeks, aligning with Trump’s pivot to a “states’ rights” stance on abortion, despite his prior support for federal abortion restrictions.
Musk’s contributions extended beyond RBG PAC. America PAC, another pro-Trump super PAC, received $238 million from Musk throughout the election cycle, including $120 million during the race’s critical final weeks. America PAC utilized these funds for canvassing, digital advertising, direct mail, and a controversial $1 million daily cash giveaway to petition signers. The giveaway prompted legal scrutiny from the Philadelphia District Attorney and warnings from the Justice Department, though no enforcement actions followed.
Additionally, Musk donated $3 million to the MAHA Alliance, a super PAC tied to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s “Make America Healthy Again” campaign.
Musk’s involvement in Trump’s campaign wasn’t confined to financial support. As a visible presence at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Florida estate, Musk has become an influential figure in Trump’s transition team. He is set to co-chair the “Department of Government Efficiency” initiative, aimed at reducing federal spending.
Musk’s quarter-billion-dollar election spending marks him as one of Trump’s top donors this cycle, highlighting the tech mogul’s growing political influence and controversial methods in shaping America’s political landscape.
