Elon Musk, the ever-controversial CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, is back with his quirky sense of humor and bold propositions. His latest revival of a peculiar $1 billion offer to Wikipedia, contingent on the platform renaming itself “Dickipedia” for an entire year, has reignited conversations online.
Musk reiterated his offer recently in a response on X to a post by Doge Designer, a frequent commentator on Musk’s activities. The post referenced Musk’s original offer, stating, “Elon Musk once offered Wikipedia $1 billion to change their name to ‘Dickipedia.’” Musk promptly confirmed, “True. Offer still stands.”
This isn’t a new suggestion. Back in October 2023, Musk raised eyebrows when he openly questioned the Wikimedia Foundation’s fundraising practices. Aiming at their substantial financial requirements, he sarcastically noted, “You can fit a copy of the entire text on your phone!”
Musk didn’t just stop at expressing his criticism. He proposed a massive $1 billion deal, but with a caveat: Wikipedia would have to adopt the moniker “Dickipedia” for at least one year. Responding to speculation about whether a temporary name change might suffice, Musk dismissed the idea with characteristic wit, saying, “I mean, I’m not a fool lol.” He said the name change would be “in the interests of accuracy.”
Despite the renewed buzz surrounding Musk’s unconventional offer, the Wikimedia Foundation has not responded publicly. The lack of engagement leaves many wondering if the tongue-in-cheek proposal will remain just that—a joke—or evolve into something more serious.
