DuckDuckGo has turned a joke into a successful product after launching a pair of sunglasses with no cameras, microphones, AI features, or electronics. The intentionally simple eyewear, created as a statement against the growing trend of AI-powered wearables, sold out within days of its release.

Developed in collaboration with Knockaround, the product is officially called the “Normal F***ing Sunglasses.” Rather than offering smart features, the glasses provide only the basics: polarized lenses, UV400 protection, FDA-compliant impact resistance, and a matte black frame based on Knockaround’s Paso Robles design. Their lack of technology is the product’s main selling point.

DuckDuckGo said the sunglasses were designed as a satirical response to the rise of AI-equipped eyewear from major technology companies. A company spokesperson argued that products such as smart glasses are increasingly turning everyday accessories into surveillance devices capable of recording video, capturing audio, and collecting user data.

The launch aligns with DuckDuckGo’s long-standing focus on digital privacy. While the company is best known for its privacy-focused search engine and web browser, it has also taken a cautious approach toward artificial intelligence. Rather than fully integrating AI-generated responses into its search engine, DuckDuckGo keeps its AI features separate after surveying users, most of whom said they did not want AI built directly into search results.

Despite being marketed partly as a joke, the sunglasses quickly found an audience. DuckDuckGo confirmed that the initial inventory sold out within days, with a significant portion of stock purchased almost immediately. The company has not disclosed exact sales figures but said demand exceeded expectations.

The rapid sellout suggests there is growing consumer interest in products that deliberately avoid smart technology. As AI-powered wearables become increasingly common, DuckDuckGo’s success highlights that some buyers still value traditional products that perform a single function without collecting data or requiring a battery.
