Former President Donald Trump attacked Google in an intense interview with Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo, accusing the internet behemoth of bias and recklessness. Trump went on a rant about the search engine after Bartiromo led the subject toward large tech corporations during the program, which was meant to address the risks of artificial intelligence.
Trump criticized Google for not apologizing for blocking search results related to his attempted assassination. He compared this to Facebook, whose representatives had called him to apologize for flagging posts about the incident with fact checks. “Google, nobody called from Google,” Trump said, before harshly criticizing the company.
The Harris campaign dismissed Trump’s rant as “unintelligible,” suggesting he was unclear in his accusations. However, Trump seemed to allege that Google’s algorithmic search result ranking was biased—a complaint he has voiced for nearly six years. He warned the tech giant with a stern message: “Google has been very bad. They’ve been very irresponsible. And I have a feeling that Google’s going to be close to shut down, because I don’t think Congress is going to take it. I really don’t think so. Google has to be careful.”
In addition, Trump alluded to the prospect of depriving Google of its Section 230 safeguards, which exclude internet firms from accountability for content created by users. He complimented Elon Musk and X (formerly Twitter), pointing out that Musk provided funding to a PAC that supported Trump’s effort for reelection.
Even though Trump’s connections with some Silicon Valley heavyweights, including tech tycoon Peter Thiel and his protégé JD Vance, whom Trump has selected for vice president, have improved, Google is still frequently accused by the far-right of stifling conservative voices. Trump’s fans are continuing to scrutinize Google as his attacks on the internet giant get more intense.
