It is only logical to think that wider tires would provide more grip. However, that is not always the case. Tyre Review has made a scientific video to show when wider tires should be used. A BMW 320d was used for the test and was fitted with different combinations of tires.
Jonathan Benson from Tyre Review tested the handling and braking in both dry and wet conditions. The different tires provided different results as everyone would have expected. The wider tires performed better in the dry handling circuit as well as both dry and wet braking tests. However, the wider tires did not perform as well on the wet handling lap and were nearly 2 seconds slower on all four corners as compared to the other tires.
The narrower tires cut through standing water much more easily than wider tires. This is the reason why some people use extra-narrow tires in the winters as they cut through snow and ice as well. However, there is more to it than just that and picking the right tire size means you need to decide what is more important to you and what you need to compromise on.
