Daimler has confirmed on Sunday that it is undergoing a regulatory probe. The statement comes after a report that stated that German authorities had found evidence of a previously unknown type of pollution trickery software that was installed by the car giant, allegedly, in some of its vehicles.
The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) has already started a formal hearing procedure according to reports. The Stuttgart-based car manufacturer has confirmed the hearing procedure. Daimler said in a statement, ‘We fully cooperate with the Federal Motor Transport Authority and are reviewing the facts. In the course of the hearing proceedings, we will present our view to KBA.’
According to a report, about 60,000 vehicles of the Mercedes-Benz GLK 220 CDI models that were produced between 2012 and 2015 were affected because of the software. The software is said to have reduced emissions of nitrogen oxide during test conditions. However, on the road, the vehicles were emitting amounts of nitrogen oxide in excess of the regulatory limits. Mind you; nitrogen oxide is a harmful gas.
The KBA – Federal Motor Transport Authority – had already ordered Daimler to recall 700,000 of its vehicles from all over the world last year. This included 280,000 vehicles in Germany only. The reason for the recall was illegal software. This particular ruling is already being appealed against by Daimler.
Daimler is also looking at a huge fine owing to the diesel scam as German prosecutors have already stated in February that they have opened a fine procedure against the scam. For those of you who are unaware, diesel investigations have been going on in Germany since 2015 back when Volkswagen, another famous car manufacturer, admitted to building defeat devices into its 11 million cars all over the world.
We believe that these car manufacturers should be heavily fined to set an example! Do you agree?
