Chinese Company Unveils A Full Scale 3D Printed Mansion

Once again, Chinese company WinSun Decoration Design Engineering Co. has expanded its capabilities of 3D printing. After constructing ten houses in under twenty-four hours last year, now they are back with the world’s tallest 3D printed buildings; a five storey apartment block and a 1,100 square meter mansion.
3D Printed Houses

The structures are on display in the Suzhou Industrial Park in Jiangsu province, the two buildings represent a new level in 3D printed construction. The technology is showing its potential in creating more traditional building and therefore, it’s suitable for use by mainstream developers.

The company said that the printer used to create the structural pieces is a whopping 105 feet long, 33 feet wide, and 21 feet tall. It looks a bit like an icing bag used to decorate cakes, and it lays down a cement like material to do the work of ‘home framing’ from construction and other industrial waste. Using this building material, which includes construction waste such as concrete dust, fiberglass strands, sand and a hardening agent, walls and ceilings are built to be tough enough to withstand earthquake damage.

The buildings are said to have more than ease and speed of their method, the 3D printing allows them to save around 60 percent of the materials used to build a home, 80 percent less labor than typical methods, and only uses up 30 percent of the time needed to finish a similar structure using traditional construction methods.

Last year, Winsun printed 10 different one storey, 200 square meter houses using nothing but industrial construction waste and a 3D printer. Each building costing $4,800 to make. The two new structures are the company’s largest 3D printed projects to date, but they’re only prototype models for now. One section of the unfinished wall on display shows the layers of the 3D printed concrete that are stacked up to build the structures. The company revealed that the villa, which cost $161,000 to build was specially designed for the Tomson Group, a well-known Tennessee based Real Estate Company. The company now aims to use its technology for larger scale constructions such as skyscrapers and bridges. Watch the video below for more:
