China’s ‘Metal Storm’ Gun Fires 450,000 Rounds Per Minute, Claim Scientists

China is redefining the limits of weapons technology with its groundbreaking ‘Metal Storm’ gun, capable of firing 450,000 rounds per minute per barrel. Equipped with at least five barrels, this advanced system generates an unparalleled barrage to intercept threats like hypersonic missiles traveling at speeds exceeding Mach 7.

Compared to the U.S. military’s Phalanx system, which peaks at 4,500 rounds per minute, China’s innovation is a game-changer. Researchers in Taiyuan, led by Lu Xutao of North University of China, have developed a novel box-style rotary system with replaceable container magazines. Each magazine includes pre-packed barrels and bullets, discarded as a single unit after firing. This design enhances loading speed, reduces wear, and ensures sustained accuracy, making the weapon highly efficient for continuous operations and rapid counterattacks.

Traditional mechanical triggers fall short of the People’s Liberation Army’s demand for 7,500 shots per second. To solve this, Lu’s team designed an electronic trigger using coils and a contactless mechanism. The trigger melts an alloy wire embedded in the bullet, creating a high-energy metal jet to ignite the explosive in just 17.5 microseconds. Test data confirms the system meets the target firing rate, positioning it as a significant advancement.

The concept of Metal Storm originated in the 1990s, pioneered by Australian inventor Mike O’Dwyer. Despite early potential, the original project faced challenges, leading to its abandonment in 2012. However, China has sustained efforts in this field, advancing bullet technology, cost reduction, and barrel reliability.

With firing rates potentially ten times higher than the Western prototype, China’s Metal Storm weapon is poised to redefine modern warfare. Its unmatched speed, precision, and adaptability could make it a vital asset in military operations, solidifying China’s position at the forefront of defense technology.
