China Has Started The Installation Of A Land-Based Small Modular Reactor On Its Nuclear Island

China Begins Nuclear Island Installation Of Land-Based Small Modular Reactor

Linglong One, a multi-functional compact modular and nuclear reactor, has commenced construction in Hainan Province, South China, Global Times reported.

The reactor is being constructed by the China National Nuclear Corporation using local research and Chinese intellectual property rights. Additionally, it is the first reactor ever granted a license by the International Atomic Energy Agency to address the varied needs for electricity.

The Linlong One project is distinguished by excellent security, a short construction timeline, and modular deployment. Its construction is projected to be completed in 58 months. Each Linglong One set, with a power capacity of 125,000 kilowatts, is capable of producing one billion kilowatt-hours of electricity.

Since China is actively pushing the switch to low-carbon and environmentally friendly energy sources, The Linglong One is an example of China’s increased investment in energy projects.

The National Energy Administration reports that in the first eight months of 2022, China’s investment in energy projects climbed by 16.7% over the same period last year.

“The Linglong One may serve as a demonstration project. However, one issue with the compact reactor is that it is difficult to sell due to its restricted capacity,” said Lin Boqiang, head of Xiamen University’s China Center for Energy Economics Research.
