Chinese automaker BYD is preparing to enter the high end performance segment in Europe with a new electric hypercar under its Denza brand. The model, called the Denza Z, was recently showcased as a production ready convertible and is expected to launch globally this summer, targeting a category traditionally dominated by European luxury manufacturers.

The Denza Z made its debut at the Beijing Auto Show, where it was presented as a four seat convertible with a retractable soft top. The vehicle is part of BYD’s broader push into premium markets and is positioned as a high performance electric alternative to established supercar brands. The company is aiming to challenge long standing competitors by combining advanced battery technology with aggressive performance targets, as reported by Electrek.

Designed under the direction of Wolfgang Egger, the Denza Z follows a “Pure Emotion” design philosophy, featuring extensive use of carbon fiber across the body and interior to reduce weight. Aerodynamic elements, including a hood mounted air duct, are intended to improve downforce and stability at high speeds.

Performance figures place the vehicle firmly in hypercar territory. BYD claims output of over 1000 horsepower, with acceleration from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in under two seconds. The car is expected to use the company’s Blade Battery along with its Flash Charging 2.0 system, which could enable charging times as low as five minutes under optimal conditions.

The Denza Z is also equipped with BYD’s Disus M intelligent body control system, designed to enhance handling and ride stability during high speed driving. The same system has been used in other high performance models within BYD’s lineup, indicating a focus on transferring proven technologies into this new segment.

While full specifications have not yet been released, the model is expected to offer a driving range similar to the Denza Z9 GT, which can reach up to 599 kilometers under WLTP standards. Pricing details remain unconfirmed, but the Denza Z is likely to exceed the cost of the Z9 GT, which recently entered the European market at over 115000 euros.

Ahead of its official launch, BYD has begun testing the vehicle at the Nürburgring, a track commonly used to validate high performance cars. The company is expected to present the Denza Z to a broader audience at the Goodwood Festival of Speed later this year.

The introduction of the Denza Z signals a shift in the competitive landscape, with Chinese manufacturers increasingly targeting segments that were once dominated by legacy European brands.
