Zebra crossings serve a very vital and useful function on the roads, but that’s where their relevance ends. They really aren’t interesting enough to turn heads or make a home in people’s hearts and minds.
But these unimaginative strips of white lines stretching across grey tarmac have been changed forever when they met Christo.
Bulgarian artist Christo Guelov has taken up the mission to breath life into crossings and turn these boring strips into a piece of art.
The artist has been going around the city to turn the crossings in Madrid into colourful pieces of art in his project called Funnycross.
His paintbrush yields stunning colours and geometric designs, converting these stale public installations into masterpieces and even a tourist attraction.
The writer elaborated about his project by saying, “Funnycross uses zebra crossings to intervene in the urban landscape. A bridge between two shores is the starting point of this artistic intervention.”
The project also aims at raising awareness for both drivers and pedestrians about the significance of road crossings using these boldly coloured strokes.
