The $4 million hybrid supercar with 1,800 horsepower, the Bugatti Tourbillon, is the brand-new marvel from Bugatti. The $3.3 million, 1,500 horsepower Bugatti Chiron will be replaced by this new model, carrying on the brand’s unmatched performance and luxury tradition.
The newly formed firm Bugatti Rimac, which resulted from the merging of Bugatti and Croatian electric supercar maker Rimac, chose to keep the core characteristics of Bugatti powertrains despite the industry trend toward electric vehicles. The CEO of Bugatti Rimac, Mate Rimac, stressed that the company wants to build a plug-in hybrid car instead than an all-electric one. His goal was to use electric technology to improve Bugatti’s performance without sacrificing its mechanical essence.
The Bugatti Tourbillon is equipped with a massive 16-cylinder gas engine, designed in collaboration with Cosworth, a renowned British race car engineering firm. Complementing this engine are three electric motors: one at the rear and two at the front, collectively generating over 800 horsepower. This hybrid system compensates for the absence of turbochargers, unlike the Chiron, which utilized four. Rimac explained their goal to develop a high-revving, naturally aspirated engine for a more thrilling and emotional driving experience.
The Tourbillon’s interior is a tribute to classic mechanical engineering, inspired by the intricate gears of traditional watches. The car’s instrument display mimics watch dials, and the speedometer features two needles, akin to clock hands, with one indicating speed and the other showing engine revolutions per minute. With a fully charged battery, the Tourbillon can travel approximately 37 miles on electric power alone, with an option to run the gas engine continuously if desired.
A notable feature is the discreet display screen with Apple CarPlay, which remains hidden until requested, aligning with Bugatti’s philosophy of timeless design. Rimac highlighted their forward-thinking approach, ensuring the car’s aesthetic appeal endures for decades.
Production of the Bugatti Tourbillon will be limited to just 250 units, all handcrafted at Bugatti’s factory in Molsheim, France. Each vehicle carries a starting price of around $4 million, a testament to its exclusivity and craftsmanship.
