Astronauts returning from long missions aboard the International Space Station (ISS) often describe an unexpected challenge, readjusting to everyday life on Earth. From the smell of rain and fresh grass to the sensation of driving a car, ordinary experiences can feel strangely unfamiliar after spending months in microgravity.
Former NASA astronaut Scott Kelly, who spent 340 consecutive days aboard the ISS, recalled that Earth’s sights, smells, and physical sensations were almost overwhelming after landing. Sitting on a normal chair made his skin ache, while driving felt less like operating a car and more like remotely piloting a machine. Similar experiences have been reported by many astronauts following long-duration missions.
One of the biggest changes involves the senses. The ISS has a controlled environment with recycled air and no weather, vegetation, or natural outdoor scents. After months without rain, soil, trees, or fresh air, astronauts often find familiar smells remarkably intense. Former Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield has also described the taste of fresh fruit after landing as almost overwhelming.
Microgravity also alters the body’s balance system. Without gravity, the inner ear adapts by relying more heavily on visual cues than the normal sensation of “up” and “down.” Once astronauts return to Earth, the brain must relearn how to process gravity, making routine activities such as walking, climbing stairs, or driving temporarily feel unnatural.
The body undergoes other changes as well. Skin becomes more sensitive after months without constant pressure from gravity, while the soft skin on astronauts’ feet can make walking uncomfortable during the first weeks back. The spine, which stretches slightly in orbit, must also readjust to Earth’s gravity, often causing back pain.
Studies have shown that long-duration spaceflight can temporarily alter brain structure, including changes in cerebrospinal fluid, gray matter distribution, and areas involved in balance and vision. Most of these changes gradually improve, although researchers continue studying their long-term effects.
Understanding these adaptations is becoming increasingly important as space agencies prepare for longer missions.
