Sophie de Oliveira Barata launched her Alternative Limb Project with a vision to transform the way we see disability. She wants to give amputees an expression of their self so that the people around them would see beyond what is missing. She believes:
“It’s drawing attention to their disability in a positive way. Having an alternative limb is about claiming control and saying ‘I’m an individual and this reflects who I am.'”
de Oliveira Barata’s work was brought to limelight by Viktoria Modesta, who wore her Swarovski crystal leg to the closing ceremony of the London Paralympics.
Her work is quite opposite the industry norms; while other people are concentrating their efforts on coming up with as natural prosthetic designs as possible Sophie aims to make a loud statement with her distinct work.
