Wonderful Engineering today, brings you a cement factory from the WW1 era which has been turned into a spectacular and unique mansion, fit for a king!
Ricardo Bofill, an architect by profession, is the man behind the huge renovation, who stumbled upon the dilapidated structure in 1973 and laid the foundation for the La fábrica.
The unique building has been going through several changes. The partial deconstruction over the span of the last 45 years, and the factory itself, located just outside of Barcelona, is now a spectacle for the onlookers.
Ricardo has laced the facade with vegetation while lavishly furnishing the interior into a modern workspace.
La fábrica is a continuous work in progress, which Ricardo compares to his life and his philosophy on life.
The industrial chimneys that were once pollution factories now flaunt breathtaking lush greenery. The site is a testimony to how creative minds can turn even an eyesore into an extravaganza.
Bofill writes on his official website,
“The Cement Factory is a place of work par excellence”
Each room is designed for an individual purpose, and no two rooms look alike. He adds,
“I have the impression of living… in a closed universe which protects me from the outside and everyday life. Life goes on here in a continuous sequence, with very little difference between work and leisure”
The house hosts some indoor and outdoor relaxation places. The exterior is adorned with grass, eucalyptus, palm, and olive trees.
“This gives the building a mysterious aspect of romantic ruin that makes it unique and unrepeatable. The kitchen-dining room located in the ground floor is the meeting point for the family”
