Apple is reportedly preparing a new set of artificial intelligence features for its next major software update, with iOS 27 expected to introduce expanded photo editing capabilities. The update is part of a broader push to improve the company’s AI system, known as Apple Intelligence, across iPhone, iPad, and Mac platforms.
The new tools will reportedly allow users to modify images in more advanced ways directly within the Photos app. Features under development include options to extend backgrounds, adjust framing after a photo is taken, and automatically enhance lighting and quality, as reported by Engadget.
Several tools are expected to be grouped under a new Apple Intelligence Tools category. These include Extend, which uses generative AI to expand image backgrounds, Enhance for automatic quality improvements, and Reframe, which can adjust perspective and composition. Apple’s existing Clean Up feature, which removes unwanted objects from photos, is also expected to be integrated into this suite.
The changes aim to bring Apple’s editing capabilities closer to competitors such as Google and Samsung, both of which have already introduced more advanced AI editing tools. While Apple has focused on incremental improvements so far, the new update suggests a broader shift toward generative editing features.
Beyond photo editing, the update is also expected to include upgrades to Siri and AI driven search within apps. Reports indicate that Apple may introduce a redesigned version of its voice assistant along with deeper integration of AI models to improve functionality.
The update is likely to be announced at Apple’s annual developer conference, WWDC, scheduled for June. As AI becomes a central part of mobile software, the company’s latest changes reflect increasing competition in delivering smarter, more automated user experiences.
