Apple has unveiled the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, bringing several improvements and changes to its flagship smartphone lineup. These new iterations introduce enhancements to captivate consumers and continue the legacy of the iconic iPhone series.
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus offer improved performance, including the Dynamic Island technology previously seen in the iPhone 14 Pro. They also come in a range of new colors and feature a notable shift—a USB-C port replacing the Lightning connector. Remarkably, the starting price for the iPhone 15 remains at $799, consistent with the previous year.
Both models retain the familiar 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays but now boast a maximum brightness of up to 2000 nits, promising a more vibrant visual experience. Apple has refreshed the color palette, offering the iPhone 15 in captivating shades like pink, yellow green, blue, and black. These colors are seamlessly integrated into the glass, resulting in striking and vibrant finishes.
In the camera department, the base model iPhone 15 features a substantial upgrade with a 48-megapixel main sensor, akin to last year’s iPhone 14 Pro series. This sensor facilitates 1x and 2x optical zoom modes, along with the familiar 0.5x ultra-wide lens. Portrait mode has received a significant boost, offering synthetic bokeh portrait shots with improved low-light performance. It now activates automatically when capturing subjects in the primary camera mode. Post-capture focus adjustment is now possible, thanks to Apple’s preservation of depth mapping data alongside image data.
Performance-wise, both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are powered by the A16 Bionic chip, previously featured in iPhone 14 Pro models. This system-on-a-chip comprises a six-core CPU and 5-core GPU, ensuring robust performance. While the iPhone 15 maintains a battery life comparable to its predecessor, the iPhone 15 Plus benefits from an extended battery, ensuring even longer usage on a single charge. The introduction of a USB-C port replaces the Lightning connector for charging and data transfer.
In terms of connectivity and features, the iPhone 15 integrates a second-generation Ultra-Wideband chip, enhancing its tracking and locating capabilities. Precision Finding now allows users to navigate directly to individuals, not just items with attached AirTags. Apple extends its Emergency SOS via Satellite feature to accommodate roadside assistance, a service offered to AAA members in the US. The Emergency SOS feature is provided free for two years with an iPhone 15 purchase, although specific pricing details remain undisclosed.
