The Algerian government ordered the telecom companies in the country to shut down internet access on smartphones and fixed-line connections so that students can be prevented from teaching. The telecom companies have been asked to disconnect the internet to prevent high school students from cheating during their diploma exams.
According to BBC report, the temporary shutdown will last till the end of the exam season on 25th June. Facebook will also remain blocked during this time period. The decision was made based on the event that happened in 2016 when exams were leaked online before the exams.
During exams, the students and school staff are not allowed to bring any device into the exam room which has internet enabled on it. Metal detectors are also placed to catch anyone who tries to take a phone or smartwatch stuffed in their socks into the exam room. The shutdown was confirmed by the Internet Intelligence project of Oracle. Iraq will also be taking the same measures in the next two weeks when it will exam season there.
