A Typhoon Just Led To A Wind Turbine Generation Record In China

Typhoon Leads To Wind Turbine Generation Record In China

In a remarkable achievement in renewable energy, Goldwind’s GWH252-16MW wind turbine, situated at the Zhangpu Liuao offshore wind farm under the ownership and development of China Three Gorges, has set a new world record for individual wind turbine output within 24 hours.

This milestone was reached on September 1st, amid the gusts of Typhoon ‘Haiku’ off the coast of Fujian province in China. The remarkable feat saw Goldwind’s GWH252-16MW wind turbine generate a staggering 384.1 megawatt-hours of electricity overnight. This outstanding achievement is a testament to the turbine’s resilience and efficiency. The power generated during these 24 hours is sufficient to meet the daily electricity requirements of nearly 170,000 individuals, as confirmed by China Three Gorges, the project’s developer and owner.

Goldwind’s GWH252-16MW model has impressive features, including blades measuring 123 meters long and a rotor diameter spanning 252 meters. With a sweeping area encompassing around 50,000 square meters, this wind turbine can generate 34.2 kWh of electricity with each revolution, making it a formidable contributor to clean energy production.

This wind turbine was installed in late June, and it was successfully connected to the grid on July 19th, marking a significant step towards harnessing wind energy for sustainable power generation. Typhoon ‘Haiku’ marked the third major weather event that the Goldwind 16 MW wind turbine withstood, solidifying its resilience reputation while shattering the 24-hour production record.

Before this achievement, the record for 24-hour output by an individual turbine was held by the Vestas V236-15.0 MW™ prototype offshore wind turbine, which generated 363 megawatt-hours of electricity in a single day back in August of the current year. Goldwind’s GWH252-16MW wind turbine has now emerged as a new champion in wind energy production, exemplifying modern turbines’ capacity to harness nature’s power for sustainable electricity generation.
