A Company You Wouldn’t Expect Just Beat Apple As The No. 1 Smartwatch Brand

Innovative wearable devices have always been used to describe Apple, but it is more of a premium smartwatch vendor. It is the thoughtful Apple Watch ecosystem and leading health features that have really driven tech enthusiasts to make it their favorite. Amidst such surprise, however, another has taken the title as the top wrist-worn device brand—Huawei.

Huawei has, for a second straight quarter in 2024, surpassed Apple in terms of global shipments, according to data from IDC’s Worldwide Wearables Quarterly Tracker. Between January and September, it garnered a 16.9% slice of the market on 23.6 million shipments, where Apple’s 22.5 million units placed it with a 16.2% share. More eye-catching is perhaps Huawei’s performance, growing 44.3% year over year, against Apple’s 12.8% decline.

A significant factor behind Huawei’s dominance is the burgeoning Chinese market, now the largest for wearables. Huawei’s strong foothold there, combined with its innovative products, has propelled its success. Notably, the company is excelling in both fitness bands and smartwatches.

The Huawei Watch D2 exemplifies the company’s innovation. This device offers Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring using a TruSense system featuring a high-precision pressure sensor, mini pump, and inflatable airbag within the strap. Unlike competitors relying on optical sensors requiring calibration, Huawei’s solution provides precise, real-time blood pressure monitoring—even during sleep or physical activities. The Watch D2 is marketed as a potential clinical reference tool, highlighting its advanced capabilities.

Moreover, Huawei appeals to a wide audience with diverse designs and features. Its fashionable smartwatches tailored to women and robust health-tracking technology outshine competitors like Apple and Samsung in some areas.

While Huawei’s current lead is impressive, the global market landscape may shift in Apple’s favor during the holiday season. For now, Huawei’s ascent underscores its growing influence in the wearable tech space.
