Say goodbye to electric engines because of the Sustainable Bus of the year 2020 for intercity routes is getting its power from natural gas. As per Sustainable Bus, the Iveco Bus Crossway Natural Power Normal Floor has been named as the most sustainable bus in the intercity category.
The judges for this aware included eight European countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Romania, Poland, Spain, and the UK. The judges were not easy ones, though; they had the manufacturers provide thoroughly-detailed information about the vehicles. The manufacturers had to answer questions from the judges while making the buses available for test drives. It was after all of this that the top buses in the categories were selected.
Sustainable Bus said the reward is the first and only European that gives a nod to sustainability in the bus industry. As per PFT Industrial, the Iveco Bus Crossway Natural Power comes equipped with the latest generation of the FPT’s Cursor 9 Natural Gas. It is a six-cylinder engine that provides the Crossway Natural Power a maximum output of 360 horsepower at 2,000 rpm and a torque of 1,640 Nm at 1,100 RPM. The size of this particular engine is the same as that of its diesel variant, implying that the bus has the same passenger capacity, luggage space, and accessibility.
FPT Industrial stated in a press release, ‘Natural Gas (NG) is currently the most viable and low-cost sustainable solution, with FPT Industrial leading this segment with some 50,000 engines sold worldwide. The Brand’s NG engines significantly reduce CO2 emissions, whether with the compressed or the liquefied form of Natural Gas. They can also run on biomethane, bringing emissions down to almost zero.’
Other winners were Mercedes-Benz eCitaro battery-electric bus that won in the urban category and the VDL Futura FHD2 – winning in the coach category.
