I, for one, would probably start screaming like a little girl if I was inside a giant 777 which had no connection to the outside world whatsoever! And would probably fade if I peeked out of the window and saw two fighter jets zooming around the plane. That’s what exactly happened to the passengers in an Indian Jet Airways Boeing 777, which was going from Mumbai to London and lost contact with air traffic controllers in Cologne, Germany.

Times of India reports that the plane did not respond to air traffic control in Cologne, Germany due to an unknown cause which led to a failure in communications. Thankfully, the leading German Air Force Eurofighter Typhoons were quick to scramble and intercept the plane, where they soon reconnected the communication center to the air traffic control on the ground. After that, the flight safely continued towards London and safely landed.

Here is a statement from Jet Airways:

Contact between Jet Airways flight 9W 118, from Mumbai to London Heathrow, of February 16, 2017, and the local ATC, was briefly lost while flying over German airspace. Communication was safely restored within a few minutes.

As a precaution, the German Air Force deployed its aircraft to ensure the safety of the flight and its guests. The flight with 330 guests and 15 crew subsequently landed at London without incident. Jet Airways has duly reported the matter to the concerned authorities including the DGCA. As part of the standard process, the flight crew of 9W 118 has been de-rostered pending investigation.

Here’s the video of the incident that was captured by a trailing British Airways plane:

Surely, this is something which we don’t get to see every day!
