Watch A Huge Sinkhole Swallow This Japanese Highway

No this is not a scene from an apocalypse movie! This is a real life sinkhole which has opened up in Fukuoka, Japan. This scary sight was nearly 8-meter-wide and took a large section of road with it this Tuesday.

The residents claim that the hole started as two smaller holes, before they combined to create 27 meters wide, 30 meters long and 15 meters deep monster.

Residents were quickly evacuated from the area, fearing any more sinkholes to pop up randomly.

This phenomenon is usually seen when some heavy weight is exerted on soft soil. Sinkholes can also form where the land surface is being changed. This might explain the one in Japan, as the officials claim that a construction site at a nearby subway could have been the source of the sinkhole. This construction was a part of the JR Hakata station extension into the city centre, which has been halted for the time being.

Fortunately, the sinkhole didn’t cause any injuries or fatalities, although it did cause a lot of inconveniences and it also cut power to about 170 houses across the city.
