This Easy Video Shows How Land Survey Is Done

Before starting a civil engineering project, the first step is to perform the survey of the land. This video from Practical Engineering shows how important the survey process is and what exactly can a survey process do. The host of the video, Grady, said, “Conventional measurement tools like a tape measure and protractor don’t work for large civil structures and public works projects. Surveying is essentially the science of measuring big stuff… Humans have always had a penchant for building big stuff which means surveying is a career full of history and tradition.”

Theodolite is among the biggest tools which are used for surveying. It measures the angle between the two points on a specific section of land. This equipment is mostly associated with land surveying. It’s a device which is fixed on a tripod. The theodolites play a very important role in gathering data. The process of conducting survey has become a lot easier since the industry has moved to digital devices from the analog ones.

Gardy has also given tips on how to survey the land and get a general topography of the lawn or the backyard. The land surveying might have gone easier as compared to the older times, however it is still very important for civil engineers to perform a proper survey before starting any civil engineering project.
