Just two weeks after its grand opening, the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon glass bridge in China has been closed and no re-opening date of the bridge has yet been announced.
Before its opening, the officials ran a successful campaign to prove that the bridge was safe for use, even inviting Dan Simmons from BBC to swing hammers at the glass bridge.
The 430-meter long Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon glass bridge is the world’s longest and the highest glass bridge, hanging 300 meters above a valley in one of the most pristine national parks in China. The officials announced that the bridge had been closed for an ‘internal system update.’
Since its opening on August 20, the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon glass bridge has attracted throngs of tourists. The official stats reveal that the bridge receives more than 10,000 visitors daily while the bridge was designed to accommodate around 8000 sightseers each day.
The announcement was made via the official Weibo page of the attraction saying that it will take a few days to ‘work on the hardware and software updates necessary to manage the visitors’ influx’.
However, no exact date for the reopening has been announced.
