Do you consider yourself a good driver just because you commute daily from home to work driving on the same road that you have been driving for years? Take a look at some of the most dangerous roads in the world and then rethink if you are still a good driver.
1. Stelvio Pass, Northern Italy:
This paved road is located in the Ortler Alps of Italy and mostly visited by cyclists. That does not make the treacherous slopes any less scary. Rising 9,000 feet above sea level with 48 sharp U-turns, only the well-trained drivers should venture there.
2. Taroko Gorge Road, Taiwan:
This dangerous road is not only perched on top of a mountain but is filled with dangerous turns, blind spots and extremely narrow passageways that make it hard for two cars to cross at the same time
3. Skippers Canyon Road, New Zealand:
This road took 22 years to complete and it is so narrow that two cars can not pass each other and to add to all that, there are no guard rails on the road.
4. Passage du Gois, France:
Only go there if you know how to swim. This road is completely submerged twice a day by high tide and there is a line of rescue towers built to rescue the stuck tourists.
5. Tianmen Mountain Road, China:
This six-mile-long road rises almost 4,000 feet above sea level and has a total of 99 dizzying turns. Completing the track and still having your wits around you is a huge feat.
6. Karakoram Highway, stretching from China to Pakistan:
This route, 15,466 feet above sea level is one of the most dangerous roads in the world and has no guard rails. Despite these facts, it still attracts tourists from all across the globe.
7. Zoji La Pass, India:
This narrow route in India at a height of 11,000 feet is closed off in the winter as it gets too dangerous to travel.
8. Guoliang Tunnel Road, China:
This narrow road was built by local villagers and it is almost touching the sky with no guard rails and winding through the natural caves.
9. Arica to Iquique Road, Chile:
This road is not only steep and narrow but extremely windy and cars are often seen tumbling down the valley. There are crushed cars with skeletons still inside them along the stretch of the valley.
10. Trollstigen, Norway:
This road in Norway has a nine percent incline and is a huge tourist attraction but it is not safe to drive it and often results in fatalities.
11. The A682, England:
This narrow, winding and steep route in England is 14 miles long and has had 100 fatalities in the last ten years.
12. Fairy Meadows Road, Pakistan:
The road lies at the base of the 26,600 feet high Nanga Parbat and having personally been on the road myself, I can vouch that it is one of the most dangerous roads in the world.
