SALT Gun Is A New Self-Defense Weapon That Anyone Can Keep

Everyone needs protection, and everyone needs to feel safe. A lot of people believe that people should keep guns as a defense weapon, but most people disagree, and rightly so. So many people keeping guns is no formula for peace. To maintain order along with safety, a startup named Salt Supply has come up with the idea of a SALT gun.

SALT is a self-defense weapon that is similar to a paintball gun, but it looks like a real one. The weapon is nonlethal both for the carrier and the victim of its attack. The rounds of the gun, filled with a powdered chemical shatter on impact. The chemical doesn’t leave any permanent damage, as it only causes temporary blindness, lung constriction, and slight skin irritation. This is painful nonetheless but not harmful in the long run.

The company Salt Supply was founded by Adam Kennedy and his wife in 2015 when they moved from California to Chicago, and a tragic shooting left them thinking about better defense mechanisms. The company began “with the mission to help keep the people you love safe by providing everyone access to the most forward-thinking defense technology available. But like most great things that are worth doing, our company started from a personal story – a personal need for something better.”

The only defense alternatives were an actual gun or tasers and pepper sprays. The first required training and licensing while the other options have a very limited range. Thus, the SALT gun was born when the couple got together with Andy McIntosh, the Head of Engineering at Honeywell. The weapon brings together the control of a weapon with the innocuous effect of a pepper spray. The chemical has been classified as safe and effective by 5000+ agencies. The first prototype of the SALT gun was meant for the family, but they decided to share their invention with the world.

According to the company, the chemical used in the gun contains an active ingredient oleoresin capsicum which is derived from ghost peppers. The chemical is more potent than the ones employed by the Department of Homeland Security and the US Military. It can cause disorientation, breathing difficulties, and a severe burning sensation when in contact with the skin. The horrifying results of the gunshots, however, last only for 50 minutes.

SALT state that their gun’s chemical compounds are more potent than those used by the Department of Homeland Security and the US Military. The shots contain the active ingredient oleoresin capsicum derived from ghost peppers. This chemical causes disorientation and breathing difficulties. Contact with exposed skin also causes intense burning sensations. As horrid as these effects seem, they will not cause permanent damage and the effects last for “only” 50 minutes. In case you are allergic to any of the chemical, we can’t really be sure how fatal or long lasting the effects might be.

Unlike gunpowder in traditional guns, SALT uses compressed air to fire its shots which has two advantages. One that the shot does not make a loud sound like other guns, two there is no significant recoil, making the arm safer and easier to use. You don’t even need to be too good of a shooter or even in the line of sight as the shot forms a puff of cloud that hangs in the air for 3 to 5 minutes. It takes a few second to take effect, but a cloud formed by a single shot is 1.2 meters by 1.5 meters. The shot has an exit velocity of 97 meters per second and shots are accurate up to 36 meters away.

Intelligently engineered, the gun does not come very cheap, though. Prices begin at $350.

Like all other things that come forward, the SALT Gun has its critics that question the potential problems caused by it. However, there is no denying that the SALT is an innovative solution to the security concerns that people face particularly due to its safety and nonlethal effects.
