Bad news for the crooks in the United States, as there’s a new Sherrif in town. And much like the ones in the great wild west, it will lasso the bad boys down before they even know it. The Police Department in the United Sates announced the arrival of a nifty device called the “Police “Bumper’s Grappler. This yellow wheel esque device mounts to the front of a police cars and is capable of stopping the car being chased down very effectively.

This mounting throws out a net which grabs onto the target’s rear wheel. It then wraps around the wheel, and drags the axle to a grinding halt while decimating the tire.  The device looks like a couple of forks from a lifter when they are attached to the front of a standard police truck such as a Tahoe, and gives the police an alternative of using the PIT manoeuvre during a car chase which involves nudging the pursued car so it spins around and stops.

To deploy the Grappler, the police just needs to run into the back of the pursued car with the centre of their car in line with targeted on’s rear wheels. Upon pressing the button, a large yellow net placed between the two extending posts is released and if it hits it grabs the tire and wraps itself around the axle, thus stopping the car in no time. If it perfectly hits the tyre, it can even rip the tyre right off the rim.

And in case the car is a front wheel drive, the police now has a connection to the car where it can apply brakes and break the momentum of the pursued car. This mechanism is effective and safe, as it stops the car in a straight line making sure the traffic in the vicinity is not in considerable danger.

Police Bumper hopes to get their hands on the bad boy pretty soon. But since it is quite costly as well as heavy, it will only be available for a specific type of cars at the moment.

This sounds like a game changer when in comes to the law enforcement agencies, but let’s just hope that Rockstar doesn’t put this in the next version of Grand Theft Auto (GTA).
