Engineering is not something boring and static; it is adventurous, dynamic and fun. Don’t believe us? Let us take you to Spain where we shall be visiting Sanlucar de Guadiana, Andalucia. Why are we here? Because over here exists a zip line, which will allow you to travel 720 meters into Algarve, Portugal.
This zip line is the only one in the world that will enable you to cross international border. Zip line stretches over the Guadiana River. One can attain speed of around 70-80 Km/h. The user shall be about 100 meter above the river, which brings us to the point; it is not for the faint-hearted. The journey starts from the Sanlúcar de Guadiana Castle and ends at Alcoutim which is about 15 meters high.
By calculations; your angle of descent is about 12.5 %. The whole trip lasts for only about one minute and once you land on the other side, you’ll be in a different time zone; one hour ahead.
Now that you have made the journey and are feel like being at the top the world, you can ask for the ferry to take you back to Spain. As a proof of this journey, you will be given a certificate and you can even rent a helmet with camera to show off the video footage to your friends.
The zip line was the idea of David Jarman, an Englishman, who funded the project individually and said; ‘Two villages in two countries, separated by a river 150 meters wide – a zip line just seemed obvious to me.’ The zip line trip will cost you 15 Euros and is open for 200 days a year.
