What’s better than Apple’s two cameras? Adding a third one, of course! And that’s exactly what ASUS has done, with its triple sensor which is capable of motion-tracking and depth-sensing.  ASUS‘s new Zenfone AR has a three 23-megapixel sensor, which combines the captured detail to create a 92-megapixel super-resolution image.

The new smartphone uses Google Tango 3D technology allowing the users to experience augmented and virtual reality. The phone can also use Tango’s computing platform to create an indoor mapping, augmented reality and more.

The device was recently unveiled by Asus at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and is also one of the rare ones compatible with Google Daydream, the US tech giant’s virtual reality system.

Asus chairman Jonney Shih spoke while unveiling the new 5.7-inch (15-centimeter) handset,

‘We are excited to be the first to enable Tango and Daydream’

The phone will be available in the second quarter of the year and uses a patented TriCam system which clusters the images from three camera sensors (23-megapixel each) to reduce its space while keeping the phone lighter and thinner.

The phone also entails Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 821 processor and is the only smartphone with 8GB of RAM. All this lies in a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display and five-magnet speakers for surround sound.

Shih also mentioned,

“This phone enables interaction with virtual objects and offers the ability to watch a movie or play a game in virtual or augmented reality.”

Asus marketing chief Erik Hermanson added,

“This is really the next wave that is going to get consumers excited about smartphones”

ASUS’s Zenfone AR can create onscreen 3D experiences using depth sensing and motion tracking, allowing the users to create a detailed picture of a physical environment of their homes or any other structure. Johnny Lee, Google Project Tango leader, said he expects ‘dozens of Tango-enabled apps’ to mark the market on the Google Play store.
